Creating a Substack account

Since this came up recently, I thought I’d share what I told someone else, in case it is useful for some of you.

How Substack Works

You don’t have to create an actual Substack account in order to subscribe to something like WRITE: Craft & Critique. All you have to do is provide an email address.

If it is a free subscription then that’s it, all done: you will receive any new posts as an email. If you click on any links in that email (e.g. the heading, which takes you to the online post; or the option to like or comment) then the link in the email cleverly identifies you, so that when it takes you to Substack it knows who you are (as in, who the post was emailed to, and that your are a subscriber). Then it should let you click “like”, or comment, or view the full post.

It works like that whether it is a free subscription or a paid one.

The emailed version: the header links take you to Substack whilst knowing you are a subscriber, even if you don’t have a separate Substack account. Nifty!

However you have the option of creating a Substack account. If you do so it can make it a bit easier to engage with people, comment, have more of a presence. You can log in and see all your subscriptions in one place. You can also cancel them easily, or manage paid subscriptions.

How To Create A Substack Account

If you don’t have a Substack account but want one, it should just be a case of going here https://substack.com/onboarding and following the prompts. Enter your email, create a password, maybe fill in your profile and add a photo (as with any social media site). Substack will recognise the email address and link your new profile to any subscriptions you have with that same email address.
